An Amazing Journey Of Chaman Artist & Author
Shri Chaman, an artist of international fame, was born on October 2, 1940, in Meerut. His love for art began in his childhood, a passion that continues to resonate today. Since 1958, Shri Chaman has served as the Principal of the School of Arts, Meerut. For the past forty years, he has organized exhibitions of his paintings at the renowned Chaman Art Gallery in Meerut. His exhibitions have received widespread acclaim in the art world and have been held in major cities across India.
The esteemed Chaman Art Gallery has been visited by numerous art lovers, renowned artists, and dignitaries, including the former Central Minister, the Honourable F.H. Mosin. In a notable instance, six American scholars visited Meerut and were so impressed by Shri Chaman’s paintings that they invited him to hold an exhibition in California. In December 1976, the Ambassador of Korea, Shri Bum Suk Lee, visited the gallery and was highly impressed, leading to the Korean Embassy purchasing a significant number of paintings.
On April 7, 1977, the Art Gallery of Shri Chaman was honored by a visit from the Ambassador of West Germany, Dr. Gerhard Pfeiffer, who admired the artist’s work. In May 1977, prominent Indian Law Specialist Shri Laxmi Mal Singhvi and his wife, the noted writer Shrimati Kamla Singhvi, visited the Chaman School of Arts and were charmed by Shri Chaman’s creative work. In July 1977, the High Commissioner of Ghana, Shri Paul B. Daugh, also visited Shri Chaman’s Art Gallery.
On October 3, 1977, at the special request of Ambassador Shri Bum Suk Lee of Korea, Shri Chaman attended Korea Foundation Day and was introduced to Vice-President Shri B.D. Jatti. On November 3, 1977, the Australian Trade Commissioner, Shri Brian R. Rowell, visited Shri Chaman’s esteemed Art Gallery in Delhi and engaged in a detailed discussion on art.
On February 5, 1978, Shri Chaman presented his portrait in oil colors to Japan’s former R.I. President, Shri Kioshi Toga Saki, who invited him to visit Japan. In May 1978, the Hockey Team of Australia visited Shri Chaman’s Art Gallery and found his paintings impressive. On August 23, 1978, His Excellency Fernando Fernandez Escalante, Ambassador of Argentina, visited the gallery with Lady Fernandez. On September 29, 1978, President of the World Theosophical Society, Shri B.J.N. Kotes, visited the renowned Chaman Art Gallery and praised its classic paintings.
On October 22, 1978, Shri Chaman presented a portrait of Shri Jagjiwan Ram, then Deputy Prime Minister & Defence Minister of India. On October 27, 1978, the Russian Athletic Team visited the Art Gallery, and the Ambassador of Russia, H.E. Yuli Michaicovich Voronstov, along with Cultural Attache Shri Kuligin Anatoli, also visited and highly appreciated Shri Chaman’s art. On November 18, 1978, the then Education Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Kalicharan, visited the Art Gallery and was deeply impressed, returning again on December 9.
On February 1, 1979, Mr. Magnus Wernsted, First Secretary of the Royal Swedish Embassy, visited the Art Gallery and praised Shri Chaman for his artistic skill. Articles featuring Shri Chaman’s Art Exhibitions and paintings have been regularly published in various magazines and newspapers, including “Saptahik Hindustan” and “Dharma Yug,” among others.
On February 19, 1978, India’s widely circulated English magazine, “The Illustrated Weekly,” published Shri Chaman’s paintings and life story, and the then editor Khuswant Singh honored him with the title “New Techniques.” The Shilp Kala Parishad and Board of Art and Craft Education, U.P., publicly welcomed Shri Chaman and lauded his inspiring artistic contributions, which have set new directions and values for art in India and abroad.
In January 1990, Shri Chaman received a National Award from the Indian Council for Child Education in recognition of his significant artistic contributions. Shri Chaman’s biography and photograph are included in the “INTERNATIONAL WHO’S WHO” of men & women of achievement and distinction. Shri Chaman has authored over sixty-five books on drawing and painting for students at all levels up to the postgraduate level.
Shri Chaman’s lifelong passion for art began in childhood and has blossomed into a distinguished career as Principal of the School of Arts, Meerut, since 1958. Renowned for his vibrant exhibitions at the Chaman Art Gallery over the past four decades, Shri Chaman’s paintings have captivated audiences worldwide. His artistic achievements have been honored by dignitaries and institutions globally, reflecting his profound impact on Indian and international art scenes alike.
